Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023: India at 93 among 180 countries💥

Released By : Transparency International annually since 1995. To rank 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption 

Key highlights

☆ The index uses a scale of 0 to 100 to rank Corruption Perception Index(CPI), where 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).. It uses data from 13 external sources, including the World Bank, World Economic Forum, private risk and consulting companies, think tanks and others.

India’s rank – 93 out of 180 countries, with a score of 39. Pakistan scored 29 with a rank of 133 and China, scored 42 occupying rank 76

Denmark topped the index for the sixth consecutive year. followed by Finland, New Zealand and Norway.

Somalia was ranked last, other countries occupying the bottom spots included: Venezuela, Syria, South Sudan and Yemen.

Status Report of Snow Leopards in India💥

Released by : The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is the National Coordinator for this exercise.

Key highlights

☆ This is the first-ever scientific exercise, which took around 4 years to complete.

☆ As per the assessment, India has an estimated 718 snow leopards in the wild.

Ladakh (477) has the highest number of snow leopard, followed by Uttarakhand (124), Himachal Pradesh (51), Arunachal Pradesh (36), Sikkim (21), and Jammu and Kashmir (nine).

☆ India has around 10-15% of global population of snow leopard.

Status ⋆ The snow leopard inhabits the mountains of central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, ranging from an elevation of about 1,800 metres (about 6,000 feet) in the winter to about 5,500 metres (18,000 feet) in the summer. Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

⋆ Geographical range in India: Western Himalayas: Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Eastern Himalayas: Uttarakhand and Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Hemis National Park (Ladakh) has a good presence of Snow Leopard

Indicator Species: Due to their position as the top predator in the food web, they act as an indicator of the health of the mountain ecosystem in which they live.
Threats Snow leopards are highly threatened due to poaching for its pelt and body parts, a decline in prey base (mostly Blue Sheep and Asiatic Ibex) due to increasing domestic livestock who tend to quickly deplete the high altitude pasture lands ; and retaliatory killings by village communities

5th Kaziranga Tiger Reserve Water-bird Count

The Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve have recorded a 27% increase in the number of resident and winter migratory waterbirds.

☆ It was the fifth waterbird census conducted ; from January 9-10 across the 1,302 sq km wildlife reserve, confirmed the presence of 84,839 birds, which was 18,063 more than the number recorded during a corresponding survey in 2021-22.

Bottled water holds more microplastics than thought: Study💥
