WHO Honors Countries For The First Time For Eliminating Trans Fats
  • WHO has awarded certificates recognizing five countries—Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand—for their advancements in eliminating both industrially produced and naturally occurring trans fatty acids.
  • While the ambitious target set in 2018 to fully eradicate TFA from the global food supply by the end of 2023 was not met, significant strides have been made globally.
  • WHO proposes a revised target for virtual elimination of TFA globally by 2025
  • Transfatty acids (TFA) are semisolid to solid fats that occur in two forms: industrially produced and naturally occurring. TFA have no known health benefits, and foods high in iTFA (e.g. fried foods, cakes and ready meals) are often high in sugar, fat and salt.
