Surat Hosts 12th Divya Kala Mela 2023
  • The event, titled ‘Divya Kala Mela,’ took place in Surat, Gujarat, spanning from December 29, 2023, to January 7, 2024.
  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, organised this distinctive event aimed at showcasing the products and craftsmanship of Divyang entrepreneurs and artisans from across the nation.
  • So far 11 Divya kala melas have been organised starting from 2022 in Delhi.

Maharashtra Cabinet clears OPS for employees joined after Nov 2005
  • The Cabinet approved a proposal allowing state government employees who joined service post-November 2005 an option to avail the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
  • This decision aims to benefit around 26,000 employees who were selected before November 2005 but received joining letters later.
  • It offers them an opportunity to choose between OPS and the New Pension Scheme within a stipulated timeframe.
  • Recently, states including Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab have opted to move back to the old pension system.

  • Assam prepares for the 5th ‘Gunotsav 2024,’ a state-wide assessment to evaluate 40 lakh students studying in 43,498 government schools across 35 districts, enhancing education quality and learning outcomes in government schools.
  • ‘Gunotsav’ is an initiative that began in 2017 and is currently in its fifth round. The exercise covers all districts of Assam and highlights the state’s dedication to enhancing education quality.
  • It involves teachers, students, administrators and local communities. The four core areas viz. Scholastic (children’s learning outcomes), Co-scholastic, community participation and Infrastructure

  • Marking a milestone in Indian tourism, the Gujarat government, in collaboration with Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), is spearheading the country’s first submarine tourism initiative
  • It is explore the marine life surrounding Bet Dwarka, a small island off the coast of Dwarka city, which has a mythological significance in the Hindu religion.
  • It will enable tourists to dive 100 metres below the sea in a submarine to experience the marine life around the island.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal of Trichy Airport and laid the foundation stone for several development projects worth over Rs 20,000 crore in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli.
  • The new terminal building has been developed at a cost of more than Rs 1100 crore.
  • Tiruchirappalli International Airport is Tamil Nadu’s second-largest airport in terms of international passenger traffic after Chennai.

  • The state hosted the largest simultaneous Surya Namaskar performance, involving over 4,000 participants from 108 locations across 51 categories.

  • Sun Salutation, also known as Surya Namaskar or Salute to the Sun, is a yoga practice that involves a flow sequence of twelve linked asanas.
  • The asana sequence, dedicated to the Hindu solar deity, Surya, was first recorded as yoga in the early 20th century.
  • The practice gained popularity thanks to Bhawanrao Shriniwasrao Pant Pratinidhi, the Rajah of Aundh, and was later adopted into yoga by Krishnamacharya in the Mysore Palace.
First girls’ Sainik School opened in Mathura with 870 students
  • On the 1st January, 2024, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the ‘Samvid Gurukulam Girls Sainik School’ in Vrindavan, Mathura with a strength of approximately 870 students.
  • It is made under the initiative of establishing 100 new Sainik Schools in partnership mode with Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs)/ Private/ State Government Schools in all State/Union Territories. 42 of these schools have already been set up.
  • The vision of setting up of 100 new Sainik Schools aims to provide quality education to the students in tune with the National Education Policy 2020 and provide better career opportunities, including joining the Armed Forces.
