Kalsi (Ashoka Edict)

Location: Kalsi, in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, near the Yamuna River. Discovered around 1850 by Alexander Cunningham
Significance: :Â It’s the only place in North India with this complete set of major rock edicts, illustrating the extent of Ashoka’s empire and his humane administration.
Features: Â The rock also features a carved elephant with the word “Gajatame” (best elephant), often seen as a symbol of Buddha’s conception.
